With ever-rising fuel costs, the promise of any product that boosts fuel economy is incredibly appealing. In the automotive world, we’ve seen a range of supposed fuel-saving solutions, from fuel additives to magnetic devices for fuel lines. Recently, a small device marketed as an instant fuel economy booster has emerged online: the Eco OBD2. This plug-in device claims to reduce your car’s fuel consumption simply by being plugged into your vehicle. Sounds like a miracle, right? We decided to investigate whether this gadget lives up to the hype.
OBD2 Port Deception
The concept behind the Eco OBD2 is remarkably simple: plug it into your car’s OBD2 port. This port, typically located under the steering wheel or in the center console, is designed for accessing your car’s computer system for diagnostics. Once connected, the Eco OBD2 supposedly gets to work, immediately improving your fuel efficiency.
However, the miracle promised by these devices failed to materialize when put to the test by automotive experts. According to Steve Mestdagh, a seasoned automotive expert, after testing such a plug-in, “The device doesn’t establish any connection with the vehicle’s computer system, and therefore, it is fundamentally incapable of altering the car’s operation to reduce fuel consumption.” Despite its lack of real function, the Eco OBD2 device often includes flashing LED lights and electronic circuits designed to create the illusion of activity. “When plugged in, the electronic circuit activates, and LED lights blink, giving the impression that something is happening. In reality, the device has absolutely no effect,” Mestdagh concludes.
The Placebo Effect in Fuel Saving
Despite the technical evidence against their effectiveness, some users report experiencing fuel consumption improvements after installing Eco OBD2 devices. This reported improvement, however, is likely due to the placebo effect. “Motorists using these gadgets might become more conscious of their driving habits and adopt a more fuel-efficient driving style,” our expert explains. “This change in driving behavior can indeed lead to reduced fuel consumption, but it’s entirely unrelated to the plug-in device itself.”
Adopting fuel-efficient driving habits is, in fact, the only genuine way to reduce fuel consumption in your current vehicle. “Driving smoothly, anticipating traffic flow and traffic lights – these techniques are far more effective than a device that merely flashes red lights and can cost upwards of $40,” our expert emphasizes.
