The all-new, fully electric Volvo EX90 SUV is officially on its way to customers. The first shipments of this flagship vehicle are currently en route to retailers across the United States and Europe, with initial deliveries expected to reach eager customers before the end of this month. Volvo Cars has announced plans to steadily increase deliveries, expanding to additional markets from the fourth quarter of this year through the first quarter of 2025.
The Volvo EX90 represents the pinnacle of Volvo Cars’ innovation, embodying new benchmarks in vehicle safety, sustainable design, and human-centric technology. This SUV is engineered to simplify and enhance the daily lives of its users, promising a driving experience that is both enjoyable and seamlessly integrated with modern lifestyles.
To ensure the Volvo EX90 lives up to its flagship status, Volvo Cars subjected it to rigorous testing. Jim Rowan, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, personally evaluated the vehicle extensively over recent weeks. He and his team undertook a significant road trip across the United States in the EX90, driving from the manufacturing plant near Charleston, South Carolina, all the way to California.
CEO’s First-Hand Experience: The Volvo EX90 Exceeds Expectations
“Based on this trip, I can confidently say that the EX90 is the best car we have ever made,” stated Jim Rowan. Reflecting on his 950-kilometer journey through diverse driving conditions across three US states, Rowan shared overwhelmingly positive feedback. He highlighted the seamless charging experience, responsive handling, exceptional ride comfort, remarkably quiet cabin, and the immersive sound system. He further praised the vehicle’s reliability, advanced technology interface, and overall driving feel. “I’ve never driven a Volvo car like it. The EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars, and it begins now,” Rowan affirmed.
Adding to the chorus of positive reviews, Volvo Cars recently hosted a global media test drive event near Los Angeles, California. Hundreds of journalists from around the world were given the opportunity to experience the Volvo EX90 firsthand, further validating its impressive qualities and solidifying its position as a leader in the electric SUV market.
A New Technological Era for Volvo
The Volvo EX90 marks a significant paradigm shift for Volvo Cars, being the first model powered by a central core system. This advanced in-car AI computing system is built upon the NVIDIA DRIVE® platform. Complementing this, the Snapdragon® Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., along with Volvo Cars’ proprietary software, work in concert to manage crucial vehicle functions. These include everything from safety systems and infotainment to sophisticated battery management, resulting in a driving experience that is both more responsive and user-friendly.
The EX90 is inherently intelligent and connected, featuring Google built-in for seamless integration with digital life. It is equipped with an array of advanced sensors, including radars, cameras, and lidar technology supplied by Luminar, significantly enhancing its safety capabilities. The continuous data collection from these sensors, combined with a persistent 5G connection and regular over-the-air (OTA) software updates, allows Volvo Cars to continually refine and improve the vehicle’s features and expand its functionality over time. This means the Volvo EX90 is designed to evolve and improve alongside its owner.
The Volvo EX90: A Car That Grows With You
“The Volvo EX90 embodies our vision for the future as a fully electric car manufacturer, creating vehicles that continuously improve through core computing and software updates,” Jim Rowan explained. “It stands as a testament to our global engineering prowess and reaffirms our leadership in the ongoing technological transformation within the automotive industry.”
Built on Volvo’s next-generation, all-electric platform, the EX90 boasts a driving range of up to 600km* (approximately 373 miles). Safety is paramount, and the EX90 is designed to be the safest Volvo ever produced, incorporating next-generation passive and active safety technologies, informed by a suite of state-of-the-art sensors and intelligent software.
The Volvo EX90 also introduces several firsts for the brand. It is the first Volvo vehicle to feature lidar technology and a core computing system. Furthermore, it’s the first Volvo designed for bi-directional charging, enabling owners to contribute to grid stability and promote the use of renewable energy. For audiophiles, the EX90 offers another world-first: the Abbey Road Studios mode, available with the optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system.
Production of the Volvo EX90 commenced earlier this year at Volvo Cars’ manufacturing facility just outside Charleston, South Carolina. This plant, capable of producing up to 150,000 vehicles annually, has seen substantial recent investments, including upgrades and expansions to the body and paint shops, as well as a new, cutting-edge battery pack production line. These strategic investments ensure Volvo’s US production capabilities are fully prepared for this exciting new era of electric vehicle manufacturing, starting with the groundbreaking Volvo EX90.
