Volvo Trucks Unveils CARB 2024 Compliant Engine for Next-Gen Trucks

Volvo Trucks North America is taking a significant step towards cleaner transportation with the announcement of its new engine that meets the stringent California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2024 Omnibus regulations. This development is crucial for the trucking industry as it prepares for stricter emissions standards impacting Trucks 2024 and beyond. The CARB Omnibus rule demands a substantial 75% reduction in Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions and a 50% decrease in particulate matter (PM) from heavy-duty on-road engines for model years 2024 through 2026, compared to the existing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) benchmarks.

Johan Agebrand, Director of Product Marketing at Volvo Trucks North America, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting customers through regulatory changes. “Volvo has proactively engineered an engine that not only meets but exceeds CARB’s latest mandates, simplifying compliance for our clients. We are also dedicated to keeping our customers informed, offering detailed sessions to navigate these evolving regulations and ensure they can make well-informed decisions for their operations,” Agebrand stated. He further added, “Our ongoing investment in advanced powertrain and vehicle technologies underscores our dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Alongside our leadership in electric vehicles like the Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric truck, we are heavily invested in developing a spectrum of zero and near-zero emissions solutions.”

The CARB 24-compliant engine from Volvo Trucks features a cutting-edge emission control system anchored by a fully serviceable linear Exhaust Aftertreatment System (EATS). This system is meticulously designed with individual serviceability in mind for each component, including the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Aftertreatment Heater operating at 48-volt, and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). This modular approach not only extends the operational life of the system but also reduces waste through targeted maintenance. A 48-volt alternator is integrated to power a dedicated 48-volt battery, which efficiently supports the heater during engine startup and periods of low load, optimizing emissions performance across various operational conditions for these trucks 2024.

This advanced engine is now available for order in both the Volvo VNR and the current VNL model series, offering a robust power output of 455 horsepower and 1650 lb.ft. of torque. Fleet operators seeking to upgrade to cleaner trucks 2024 and learn more about this new engine are encouraged to connect with their local Volvo Trucks dealership. Dealership staff are fully briefed on the engine’s specifications and advantages. It is important to note that for customers in California or those operating primarily within the state, a completed CARB Certification Form is a prerequisite before a vehicle order can be finalized.

The introduction of the CARB 24-compliant engine is also aligned with the broader industry shift initiated by the Clean Truck Partnership. This collaborative agreement between CARB and major truck manufacturers paves the way for nationwide harmonization of NOx emission standards starting in 2027. Volvo Trucks North America’s latest engine innovation underscores its ongoing commitment to spearheading transportation advancements that not only meet but also surpass industry benchmarks. By providing state-of-the-art solutions, Volvo Trucks empowers its customers to thrive in an increasingly regulated and environmentally conscious market for trucks 2024 and beyond.
