On U.S. Highway 89, west of Garden City, a significant safety enhancement was introduced in October 2020 with the opening of a new truck Runaway Ramp. This installation features a cutting-edge catch-net cable system, a first for Utah, engineered to safely halt runaway semi-trucks descending from Logan Canyon. This innovative solution addresses a critical safety need in an area that had previously experienced an alarming number of accidents involving out-of-control trucks.
The primary purpose of this runaway ramp, also known as a truck escape ramp, is to offer truck drivers a secure and reliable alternative when their vehicles lose control while navigating the steep downhill grades of U.S. 89. Prior to the implementation of this system, the location was unfortunately becoming known for an increasing frequency of runaway truck incidents. This new infrastructure is a proactive measure to mitigate risks and prevent accidents, providing peace of mind for both truck operators and the local community.
According to UDOT Project Manager Tom Roylance, “We are committed to proactively improving safety on all our roadways. The installation of this runaway truck ramp exemplifies our dedication to solutions that provide tangible safety benefits for truck drivers, local residents, businesses, and the many tourists who visit Garden City.” The implementation of this runaway ramp is a testament to the proactive approach taken to address and resolve safety concerns on this crucial highway.
The functionality of the escape ramp is designed for efficiency and safety. It incorporates a concrete chute that effectively guides runaway trucks into the optimal position for engagement with the cable restraints. These cable restraints are specifically engineered to progressively decelerate and bring the vehicles to a complete stop. Upon impact, the cables are designed to intelligently wrap around the truck, creating a controlled deceleration by gradually dissipating the vehicle’s momentum until it comes to a full stop.
Strategically positioned near the base of the significant downhill section of U.S. 89, the location of the cable barrier system was carefully selected. It is intentionally placed at a safe distance from busy intersections and residential or commercial driveways further east in Garden City. Furthermore, the design of the approach to the ramp provides drivers with a straight and clear line of sight, ensuring they have ample visibility and sufficient distance to safely maneuver onto the runaway ramp in an emergency situation. This thoughtful placement enhances the usability and effectiveness of the runaway ramp in critical moments.
This truck escape ramp is part of a broader strategy to enhance truck safety on U.S. 89. Additional safety measures implemented include a mandatory brake check area positioned near the summit of the hill, ensuring trucks have the opportunity to verify their braking systems before descent. Complementary to this, strategically placed signage clearly indicates the distance remaining to the truck escape ramp, providing drivers with crucial advance warning and preparedness for the safety system ahead. These combined efforts represent a comprehensive approach to making U.S. 89 safer for all road users, especially heavy commercial traffic.
