Rivian Unveils R2 and R3: New Electric Models Targeting Broader Market

Rivian, known for its robust and adventurous electric vehicles, has just announced a significant expansion to its product lineup with the introduction of its new midsize platform and the unveiling of the R2 and R3 model lines. This strategic move signals Rivian’s ambition to capture a wider segment of the electric vehicle market by offering more accessible and versatile options.

The core of these new models lies in Rivian’s innovative midsize platform. Through intelligent engineering and design, this platform achieves parts consolidation and simplification. Notable advancements include the utilization of high-pressure die castings, a structural battery pack where the top cover also serves as the vehicle floor, and streamlined closure systems. These innovations not only reduce complexity but also contribute to improved efficiency and potentially lower manufacturing costs. The R2 and R3 models will also leverage Rivian’s existing drive unit technology, in-house developed network architecture, computer topology, and software stack, ensuring a cohesive and advanced technological foundation across the Rivian ecosystem.

The Rivian R2 is introduced as a midsize five-seat SUV, designed to blend everyday practicality with Rivian’s hallmark adventure capability. Stepping into a slightly different vehicle category, the R3 is presented as a midsize crossover, engineered to deliver a compelling combination of performance, off-road prowess, passenger comfort, and ample storage space. For those seeking even more dynamic performance, Rivian announced the R3X, a performance-oriented variant of the R3, promising enhanced capabilities both on paved roads and off the beaten path.

A standout feature of the R2 is its powered rear glass, which fully retracts into the liftgate. This design element not only facilitates the transport of longer items but also creates an open-air driving experience, connecting occupants more directly with their surroundings. Furthermore, the R2 is designed with versatility in mind, featuring first and second-row seating that can fold flat, creating a spacious area suitable for gear, cargo, and even car camping.

Both the R2 and R3 will offer customers a choice of two battery pack sizes. Rivian estimates that the larger battery pack will provide a range exceeding 300 miles on a single charge. For performance enthusiasts, the quickest powertrain configuration promises exhilarating 0-60 mph acceleration in under three seconds.

Rivian is aiming for competitive pricing to broaden the appeal of these new models. The R2 is anticipated to start at approximately $45,000, with the R3 positioned at a more accessible price point below that. Rivian believes this pricing strategy will make their electric vehicles attainable for a larger segment of consumers.

“Rivian’s development teams have been intensely focused on cost through manufacturing, design innovation, and robust supply chain development,” Rivian stated in their press release. Enthusiasts in the U.S. can reserve the R2 starting today with a $100 deposit, and deliveries are projected to commence in the first half of 2026. Deliveries of the R3 and R3X will follow after the R2 launch, ensuring a smooth initial rollout and efficient production ramp-up for the R2.

Further technical details of the R2 and R3 include:

  • Motor Options: A range of drivetrain configurations will be available, including single-motor (rear-wheel drive), dual-motor (all-wheel drive), and a high-performance tri-motor setup (two motors in the rear and one in the front).
  • Structural Battery: The vehicles will utilize all-new 4695 cells within a structural battery pack. These advanced cells are designed to offer substantial improvements in energy density and power output, contributing to the targeted 300+ mile range for both R2 and R3.
  • DC Fast Charging: Recognizing the importance of convenient charging, the R2 and R3 will be compatible with both the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and the Combined Charging System (CCS) via an adapter. This compatibility will allow for rapid DC fast charging from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.
  • Enhanced Self-Driving Capabilities: Rivian’s next-generation perception system will incorporate 11 cameras, five radars, and a more powerful computing platform. This advanced suite of sensors and processing power is expected to deliver significantly enhanced autonomous driving functionalities.
  • Software Updates and Feature Expansion: Continuing Rivian’s commitment to continuous improvement, the R2 and R3 will be built upon a network architecture, computer topology, and comprehensive software platform designed to facilitate frequent over-the-air software updates, enabling new features and enhancements over time.

“I have never been more excited to launch new products — R2 and R3 are distinctly Rivian in terms of performance, capability, and usability, yet with pricing that makes them accessible to a lot of people,” stated RJ Scaringe, Rivian founder and CEO. He further emphasized, “Our design and engineering teams are extremely focused on driving innovation into not only the product features but also our approach to manufacturing to achieve dramatically lower costs. R2 provides buyers starting in the $45,000 price range with a much-needed choice with a thoroughly developed technology platform that is bursting with personality. I can’t wait to get these to customers.”

Rivian emphasized that the R2 and R3 designs demonstrate the adaptability of their core design language across different vehicle sizes and body styles. Jeff Hammoud, Rivian chief design officer, commented, “Our R1 flagship vehicles served as our handshake with the world with R2 and R3 our obsessive goal is to stay true to Rivian’s product attributes while making our products accessible to a lot more people. Through a tight integration of hardware, software and human-centered design, we designed R2 by balancing form with function, while building on our inviting and iconic design language.”

Key design priorities for the R2 include:

  • Adventure-Oriented Design: Large windows, including four passenger windows and a fully drop-down powered rear glass, along with vented powered rear quarter windows, aim to create a unique open-air driving experience, inviting the outside in. The R3 adopts a sporty hatchback style, catering to a different aesthetic preference.
  • Spaciousness and Practicality: Significant attention has been given to passenger legroom and cargo capacity in both models. Fold-down seats, front and rear trunks, and additional interior storage solutions maximize versatility and usability.
  • Refined Interior Touches: Rivian’s new steering wheel incorporates integrated haptic control dials and features easy-to-clean textiles and finishes, reflecting a focus on both technology and user-friendly materials.

In terms of production plans, Rivian intends to commence R2 manufacturing at its existing facility in Normal, Illinois. This strategy allows for an accelerated launch of the R2 and significantly reduces the capital investment required. The Normal plant’s capacity will be expanded to 215,000 vehicles per year, encompassing the R1T, R1S, EDV, RCV, and the new R2. While the Georgia plant remains a crucial component of Rivian’s long-term strategy for scaling R2 and R3 production, the company plans to resume construction at a later date, prioritizing the R2 launch in Illinois.

With the introduction of the R2 and R3, Rivian is poised to broaden its reach in the electric vehicle market. These new models, built on a cutting-edge platform and offering a compelling blend of performance, technology, and accessibility, represent a significant step in Rivian’s journey to becoming a major player in the EV landscape.
