Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: Redefining Luxury and Versatility

The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo emerges as a striking evolution of the successful sports saloon, making a definitive statement in the luxury automotive segment through its unmistakable design and enhanced practicality. This model, boasting up to 550 horsepower in the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo variant, redefines versatility within its class, seamlessly blending everyday usability with the exhilarating performance expected from Porsche. Featuring a generously sized tailgate, a conveniently low loading edge, expanded luggage capacity, and a flexible 4+1 seating arrangement, the Panamera Sport Turismo is the quintessential choice for those who demand both adaptability and driving pleasure. According to Michael Mauer, Director of Style Porsche, “The Panamera Sport Turismo represents Porsche’s foray into a new segment, all while upholding the core values and characteristic attributes synonymous with the Porsche brand.”

Technologically and aesthetically, the Sport Turismo incorporates all the groundbreaking innovations first seen in the latest Panamera model line. These advancements include the cutting-edge digital Porsche Advanced Cockpit, state-of-the-art assistance systems like Porsche InnoDrive with adaptive cruise control, sophisticated chassis technologies such as rear axle steering, the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC Sport) electronic roll stabilisation, and a range of potent powertrains. Moreover, every Panamera Sport Turismo comes standard with Porsche Traction Management (PTM), an active all-wheel-drive system managed by an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. Starting with the S models, adaptive air suspension featuring three-chamber technology is also included as standard equipment, ensuring a ride that is both dynamic and supremely comfortable.

Design and Concept: The Embodiment of an All-Around Sportscar

Mirroring the sleek lines of the Panamera sports saloon, the Sport Turismo proudly displays dynamic proportions that are instantly recognizable as Porsche DNA. Its dimensions measure 5,049 millimetres in length, 1,428 millimetres in height, and 1,937 millimetres in width, supported by a substantial 2,950 millimetre wheelbase. The car’s athletic stance is further accentuated by short overhangs and imposing wheels, which can be up to 21 inches in diameter.

From the B-pillars rearward, marking the beginning of the rear doors, the Sport Turismo distinguishes itself with a uniquely crafted rear design. Above the powerfully sculpted shoulders, an extended window line and a correspondingly elongated roof contour contribute to the vehicle’s distinctive silhouette. At the rear, the roofline maintains a gentler descent compared to the window line, creating a prominent and characteristic D-pillar that gracefully merges into the shoulder section in a manner reminiscent of a coupé.

Segment-First Adaptive Extendable Roof Spoiler

Crowning the vehicle is a roof that integrates an adaptive spoiler. This spoiler’s angle dynamically adjusts across three settings based on driving conditions and the selected vehicle mode, generating up to 50 kg of additional downforce on the rear axle. At speeds below 170 km/h, this aerodynamic element—a core component of Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA)—remains retracted at a minus seven-degree angle to minimize drag and enhance fuel efficiency.

Exceeding 170 km/h, the roof spoiler automatically transitions to its performance position at a plus one-degree angle, thereby improving driving stability and enhancing lateral dynamics. Engaging Sport or Sport Plus driving modes automatically deploys the spoiler to the performance position from speeds of 90 km/h upwards. PAA also actively adapts by tilting the roof spoiler to a plus 26-degree angle when the panoramic sunroof is open at speeds of 90 km/h or higher, effectively reducing wind noise within the cabin.

Redesigned Rear with Three Seats

The new Sport Turismo marks a first for the Panamera line, offering three rear seats. The two outer seats are designed as individual seats, upholding the model line’s commitment to sporty performance combined with passenger comfort, resulting in a 2+1 rear configuration. For those preferring even more individualised comfort, the Panamera Sport Turismo is also available with a four-seat configuration, featuring two electrically adjustable individual rear seats.

The elevated roofline of the Sport Turismo enhances rear passenger accessibility, making entry and exit easier while also increasing headroom. The practicality of the luggage compartment is greatly improved by the wide, standard electrically operated tailgate and a low loading sill height of just 628 millimetres. Offering up to 520 litres of storage to the upper edge of the rear seats (425 litres in the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo), the Sport Turismo surpasses the sports saloon by 20 litres. With the rear seats folded and loaded to the roof, the volume advantage grows to approximately 50 litres. The backrests of the three rear seats can be conveniently folded either together or individually in a 40:20:40 split, electrically unlocked from the luggage compartment. Folding all backrests creates a nearly flat loading floor, expanding the total storage capacity to an impressive 1,390 litres (1,295 litres in the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo).

Engine Options and Market Availability

For optimized cargo management, an optional system is available for the Panamera Sport Turismo. This system includes features such as two rails integrated into the loading floor, four lashing points, and a partition net, ensuring secure transport of luggage. An optional 230-V electrical socket can also be specified for the luggage compartment, adding further convenience.

The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is available for order now, heralding a new era of versatility and luxury in the Porsche lineup. The European market launch was set for October 7, 2017, followed by other markets in early November. The Panamera Sport Turismo was introduced with a selection of five engines, mirroring those available in the sports saloon variant, ensuring a diverse range of performance options to suit various driving preferences.
