U.S. Postal Service Unveils New Electric Postal Service Trucks

WASHINGTON — The United States Postal Service (USPS) proudly presented its cutting-edge, zero-emission electric Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) at its headquarters in L’Enfant Plaza, marking a significant step in the modernization of its delivery fleet.

These state-of-the-art vehicles are now operational, delivering mail and packages across various communities nationwide. This initiative represents the most ambitious fleet overhaul in decades for the Postal Service, aimed at enhancing delivery services, improving working conditions for postal employees, and significantly reducing the organization’s carbon footprint. The fleet modernization is a cornerstone of the USPS’s 10-year “Delivering for America” plan, a comprehensive $40 billion investment strategy focused on upgrading and optimizing the Postal Service’s processing, transportation, and delivery networks.

Ongoing Commitment to Modernizing America’s Postal Fleet

From the outset, USPS committed to procuring the most environmentally sustainable vehicles for its entire fleet, while carefully considering financial and operational factors. The Postal Service acknowledges that the pace of electrification and the delivery schedule for the fleet may adapt as further vehicle acquisitions are made, the organization’s financial standing improves, and operational strategies evolve.

In December 2022, USPS announced its ambitious plan to acquire 106,000 new vehicles, with a minimum of 66,000 being battery electric delivery vehicles. This commitment includes 45,000 electric NGDVs and an additional 21,000 commercially available off-the-shelf (COTS) battery electric vehicles. Following this announcement, in February 2023, the Postal Service placed its initial order for 9,250 electric COTS vehicles, along with over 14,000 electric vehicle charging stations to support the new fleet’s infrastructure needs.

The Postal Service’s total investment in vehicle modernization amounts to $9.6 billion, demonstrating a substantial financial commitment to this transformative project. The strategic deployment of these new postal service trucks will continue over the next five years, prioritizing regions based on delivery volume, infrastructure readiness, and specific operational requirements. This phased approach ensures a smooth and effective transition to a modern, efficient, and sustainable postal delivery network.
