Getting excited about a three-row SUV might sound like the definition of suburban boredom, but let me tell you, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is far from dull. Typically, the driving experience in three-row SUVs isn’t exactly thrilling. And that was acceptable—until now.
The Mazda CX-90: Surprisingly Fun, Like a Great Dentist
Being an adult comes with its share of less-than-thrilling tasks, like taxes and dentist appointments. But discovering a good dentist? That changes everything! Suddenly, a chore becomes almost enjoyable. Three-row SUVs are similar. You could opt for a large, cumbersome SUV and resign yourself to body roll, wide turns, and parking struggles. Or, you could choose something that’s genuinely enjoyable to drive without feeling like the third row is a burden. The Mazda CX-90 is definitely in that latter category.
In fact, there wasn’t a single moment I wished I could just cut the car in half for some driving fun. Parking? Not a stressful thought at all. This is a three-row SUV that doesn’t drive like one.
The CX-90’s Looks Match Its Driving Dynamics
I’ve learned to reserve my excitement about a car until I actually get behind the wheel. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 was no different. After seeing its stunning design at its Malibu debut, I was both eager and a bit anxious for the test drive. But after navigating it through San Francisco streets, up through Marin County, and into Sonoma, I was completely sold.
Yes, There Were Challenges During the CX-90 Test Drive
Now, you might be thinking, ‘Of course you loved it! You got to drive a brand-new car on scenic Sonoma County roads without any real-world hassles.’ But for the record, I did have a tedious work call during the drive! And more importantly, while the roads were beautiful, they weren’t without their obstacles.

That’s right, the road was completely washed out! But with the CX-90’s all-wheel drive and all-weather tires, I felt confident. Being a good swimmer also helped! I decided to go for it. And I’m happy to report the CX-90 felt so stable and secure that I wasn’t even that worried.
Your Comfort is a Priority in the CX-90
Another truly remarkable aspect of the Mazda CX-90 is its seating. I often recommend Volvo seats for their comfort, and I still stand by that. However, Mazda has seriously impressed me here. The seats in the CX-90 are incredibly comfortable, offering excellent adjustability and fantastic ergonomics. And get this – even the third row is actually comfortable. It was surprising and delightful.
Verdict: The Mazda CX-90 Outshines the CX-9 in Every Way
While Mazda hasn’t officially announced it, it’s widely expected that the CX-90 will replace the CX-9. Having driven the CX-9, I can confidently say the CX-90 is significantly better. It’s a major leap forward. Between the plug-in hybrid and the inline six versions of the CX-90, I personally preferred the inline six. It felt smoother, and the turbocharged trim was truly outstanding.
