Mazda CX-9 Earns Car and Driver’s 10Best Trucks and SUVs Award

Mazda vehicles are renowned for their captivating designs and engaging driving dynamics, embodying the KODO—Soul of Motion design philosophy. The all-new Mazda CX-9 midsize crossover SUV perfectly exemplifies this ethos, gaining recognition as a Car and Driver 10Best Trucks and SUVs award winner in its inaugural year.

The Mazda CX-9 has garnered acclaim for its sophisticated design, responsive driving performance, and innovative engineering. This model marked the culmination of Mazda’s full vehicle lineup redesign, integrating lightweight, fuel-efficient SKYACTIV Technology and the striking KODO—Soul of Motion design language. A standout feature is its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T turbocharged engine, delivering a robust 310 lb-ft of torque from a mere 2,000 rpm. Significantly lighter than its predecessor by approximately 250 lbs., the CX-9 achieves a remarkable 25 percent improvement in combined EPA-estimated fuel economy, thanks to the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.

Power is effectively managed by the CX-9’s i-ACTIV all-wheel-drive system. This predictive system dynamically adjusts power distribution to individual wheels over 200 times per second, ensuring optimal grip and stability. Mazda’s i-ACTIV all-wheel drive utilizes data from 27 sensors—including thermometers, wheel sensors, and even windshield wiper operation—to accurately assess road conditions. This comprehensive data analysis ensures drivers and passengers experience confident handling, even when encountering less-than-ideal road surfaces.

Mazda elevated the CX-9 lineup with the introduction of the Signature trim, positioned above the previous top-tier Grand Touring trim. The CX-9 Signature distinguishes itself with exclusive Auburn Nappa leather seating, genuine aluminum trim inspired by Japanese swords, and rosewood interior accents sourced from premium guitar maker Fujigen.

The Mazda CX-9 joins the Mazda3 sedan and hatchback, along with the MX-5 Miata soft top and MX-5 RF retractable fastback, as recipients of 2017 Car and Driver awards. The Mazda3 and MX-5 models were previously announced as car category winners at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Further solidifying its position as a leading SUV, the CX-9 was also recognized at the L.A. Auto Show as a top-three finalist for the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award. This prestigious award is judged by an independent panel of 54 media professionals from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The winner is set to be revealed on January 9 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
