While WLTP figures provide a useful benchmark for comparing different EVs (similar to comparing MPG for petrol cars), an EV’s ability to achieve its claimed range in real-world driving depends on numerous variables. These include driving style, road conditions, and ambient temperature. Colder temperatures, in particular, are known to negatively impact battery performance and reduce range.

It’s best to interpret the claimed range (or efficiency) of an electric car similarly to the MPG figures of a petrol or diesel vehicle. Both are calculated using standardized testing procedures designed to simulate real-world driving conditions but cannot account for every possible scenario. These figures are most valuable for comparing the relative range or efficiency of different vehicles.

In our testing, we’ve sometimes exceeded claimed efficiency figures when driving EVs at moderate, consistent speeds. Conversely, we’ve observed lower efficiency when driving at higher speeds for extended periods. Therefore, while some EVs can indeed travel between 300 and 400 miles on a charge, achieving their maximum claimed range during sustained 70 mph highway driving may not always be possible.

Does Cold Weather Impact EV Range?

Yes. Like the lithium-ion batteries in smartphones, laptops, and cameras, EV battery packs are affected by cold temperatures. Lower temperatures reduce battery performance and can decrease range. To mitigate this, pre-heating your EV while it’s still connected to a charger is highly recommended.
