Mercedes-AMG is forging a new path in its illustrious 57-year history, embarking on its first ever completely in-house developed SUV. This groundbreaking High Performance Suv, originating “Born in Affalterbach,” is built upon the cutting-edge, proprietary AMG.EA electric high performance platform. Enthusiasts can anticipate initial test drives of development vehicles commencing this winter season.
High performance SUVs have become integral to the AMG legacy. More than two decades ago, AMG pioneered this vehicle category with the introduction of the ML 55 AMG. This segment rapidly gained popularity, experiencing consistent growth. Today, the Mercedes-AMG portfolio includes six distinct SUV model lines, spanning from the AMG GLA and GLB to the GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV. The iconic Mercedes-AMG G 63 Geländewagen stands as the flagship within their performance SUV range.
This latest SUV endeavor marks a significant milestone, with Mercedes-AMG taking full control of the entire vehicle architecture design for the first time. This full-size SUV will be the second model to utilize the all-electric AMG.EA high performance platform. It also represents the sixth vehicle engineered entirely by the performance specialists in Affalterbach, joining the ranks of the first AMG.EA model currently undergoing testing, alongside models like the AMG GT, SL, previous generation GT, and SLS.
Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class & Mercedes‑Maybach divisions, stated, “SUVs have consistently ranked among our most sought-after models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are directly addressing this demand by presenting our clientele with an exceptionally compelling high performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform. Our innovative high performance architecture adheres to a clear principle: ‘AMG First, EV Second.’ This signifies that these vehicles will not only excel as electric vehicles but will also embody the quintessential AMG attributes of emotion and unparalleled performance.”
