General Motors (GM) has announced a significant recall impacting nearly 450,000 of its popular SUV and pickup truck models. The recall stems from a critical safety concern: a faulty brake fluid indicator system that may fail to alert drivers when brake fluid levels are dangerously low. This issue could compromise braking performance and increase the risk of accidents, prompting GM to take swift action.
According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects various 2023 and 2024 models. The problem was first brought to GM’s attention through its “Speak Up For Safety” program by a company engineer who noticed the brake fluid indicator light failed to illuminate during a routine leak test.

GM’s subsequent investigation, launched on April 30, 2024, revealed a software mismatch between the electronic brake control module (EBCM) software and calibrations installed at the assembly plant. This discrepancy prevents the system from properly detecting and signaling brake fluid leaks, a violation of federal safety regulations. While GM states they are not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue, the potential safety implications are serious enough to warrant a large-scale recall.
The affected vehicles span a range of popular GM models, including:
- 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2023 GMC Sierra 1500
- 2023 & 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2023 & 2024 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2023 & 2024 GMC Yukon
- 2023 & 2024 GMC Yukon XL
- 2023 & 2024 Cadillac Escalade
- 2023 & 2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV
Despite the brake fluid indicator malfunction, GM assures that the vehicles still meet standard stopping distance requirements and can be driven even with low brake fluid. However, the absence of a warning light in a low brake fluid situation can lead to reduced braking efficiency and poses a heightened risk of accidents.
GM has already notified its dealers about the recall on September 12th, and owner notification letters are expected to be sent out around October 28th. The remedy for this recall is a software update to the electronic brake control module. This update will be provided free of charge to vehicle owners and can be performed either as an over-the-air (OTA) update in some cases or by visiting a GM dealership.
Owners of the listed vehicle models are strongly encouraged to check if their vehicle is included in this recall and schedule the necessary software update as soon as possible to ensure their vehicle’s brake system is functioning correctly and safely. For further information, owners can contact their local GM dealer or visit the NHTSA website and search for recall number 24V674000.
