Toyota has issued a safety recall affecting approximately 12,600 of its 2022-2023 Corolla Cross vehicles in the United States. This recall addresses a potential issue with the front passenger airbag system.
The recall stems from a previous inspection process that may have been flawed, failing to identify vehicles that require a specific remedy. The core problem lies within the instrument panel, where a manufacturing error could prevent the front passenger airbag from deploying correctly in the event of a crash. This noncompliance with federal safety standards increases the risk of injury to the front passenger during a collision.
To rectify this situation, Toyota dealerships will conduct a re-inspection using an improved process. For vehicles requiring attention, dealers will replace the instrument panel at no cost to the vehicle owner. Owners of affected 2022 and 2023 Corolla Cross models will be notified by Toyota starting in mid-February 2024. Until the vehicle has undergone inspection and received the necessary repair, Toyota strongly advises that no one occupies the front passenger seat.
Vehicle owners can determine if their 2022-2023 Toyota Corolla Cross is part of this recall by visiting Toyota.com/recall or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at nhtsa.gov/recalls. By entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate information on these websites, owners can quickly check their recall status.
