Introduction
Often described as a maverick, my life has been a testament to challenging norms and transforming obstacles into opportunities. At the age of 15, a diving accident in the Bahamas resulted in a C6 quadriplegic diagnosis. While many might perceive this as a life-altering limitation, I recognized it as a catalyst for profound change. That day, during which I experienced clinical death for two and a half minutes after drowning, became paradoxically one of the most pivotal and positive moments in my life. It ignited an unyielding determination to transcend perceived boundaries. This drive propelled me to ascend the corporate hierarchy, achieve the distinction of becoming the world’s first and only quadriplegic rescue scuba diver, and successfully complete twelve marathons within a single year. My narrative transcends mere inspiration; it’s about proactive resilience – discovering unconventional “loopholes” to flourish beyond self-imposed and externally projected limitations.
Embracing the Thrill of Racing as a Car Driver
In 2021, I embarked on an exhilarating new chapter: competitive car racing. Living in close proximity to Lime Rock Park, a premier racing circuit in the nation, coupled with a lifelong passion for speed and a track-day experience gifted by my wife, Maggie, ignited this thrilling pursuit. Racing quickly evolved from a mere hobby into a powerful symbol of liberation. Once securely strapped into my hand-controlled Porsche GT4 Cayman Clubsport MR, my wheelchair becomes irrelevant, and I compete on equal footing with other drivers. Since entering the world of motorsports, I’ve participated in prestigious series including International GT, SCCA, and the World Racing League. My journey as a Car Driver has been marked by significant achievements, including multiple podium finishes and opening doors to unexpected opportunities. These include appearances in Pennzoil commercials, becoming a brand ambassador for Volkswagen, and an upcoming exciting project set to launch in March.
Beyond the Racetrack: A Career of Leadership and Inspiration
My endeavors extend beyond the high-octane environment of the racetrack. I’ve cultivated a dynamic career as a marketing strategist and currently hold the position of Chief Marketing Officer at Aloqia. Throughout my career, I have held leadership positions at prominent agencies such as Deloitte Consulting, J Walter Thompson, BBDO, and R/GA. Furthermore, I co-founded the Just Hands Foundation, an organization dedicated to introducing adaptive athletes to the empowering worlds of performance driving and mountain biking. My work, both on and off the track, is fueled by a deep-seated desire to inspire action in others. I aim to provide not just motivational concepts but tangible pathways for individuals to overcome their personal “wheelchairs,” whether visible or invisible, and transform challenges into sources of strength.
Living Life Without Limits as a Car Driver
Today, I reside in Sharon, CT, alongside Maggie and our dog, Beau, embracing life as an ongoing adventure. Through racing, public speaking, and sharing my personal story, my mission is to demonstrate that limitations are often self-constructed illusions. Whether facing a physical disability, grappling with PTSD, navigating the complexities of relationships, striving for success in the corporate world, or confronting any other form of adversity, the fundamental principle remains the same: recognize the internal barriers, relentlessly push beyond them, and wholeheartedly embrace the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.
