M HYBRID Drive: Electrifying Performance and Range in the BMW M5 2024

At the heart of the new BMW M5 lies the groundbreaking M HYBRID drive system. This innovative system combines a high-revving 4.4-liter V8 engine with an electric motor seamlessly integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The combustion engine, a masterpiece of engineering, boasts cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, and optimized oil separation. It delivers a formidable 430 kW/585 hp of maximum output and a staggering 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of peak torque. Complementing this powerhouse is an electric motor generating 145 kW/197 hp, with a nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft). An ingenious pre-gearing stage amplifies the effective torque at the transmission input to an impressive 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).

Drawing inspiration from the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racing machine, the M HYBRID system prioritizes instant power delivery from the electric motor and intelligent coordination between the combustion engine and motor. This synergy ensures immediate responsiveness to every accelerator input, resulting in the signature linear power delivery characteristic of BMW M models, now in an even more compelling form. The V8 engine’s ability to rev up to 7,200 rpm further enhances the driving experience, delivering relentless power across the rev range. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), but opting for the M Driver’s Package raises this limit to an exhilarating 305 km/h (189 mph).

The auditory experience is just as thrilling, with the sports exhaust system producing a multi-faceted and emotionally charged engine note. Electrically controlled, continuously adjustable flaps within the exhaust system and the iconic M quad exhaust tailpipes, finished in Black Chrome, contribute to the symphony of performance.

BMW IconicSounds Electric provides a unique acoustic dimension to the electric motor’s power delivery. This M-specific electric drive sound authentically responds to accelerator inputs in all-electric mode. Furthermore, in hybrid operation, it creates an engaging soundscape that underscores the seamless integration of electric power with the V8 engine’s roar.

In all-electric mode, the new BMW M5 can reach speeds up to 140 km/h (87 mph). The high-voltage battery, strategically positioned low in the vehicle’s underbody, boasts 18.6 kWh of usable energy. This enables an impressive electric range of 67 – 69 kilometers (42 – 43 miles) in the WLTP cycle, setting a new benchmark in its class. The Combined Charging Unit supports AC charging up to 7.4 kW.

Power from both the combustion engine and electric motor is expertly managed and distributed to the road via the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. This system is rear-biased, especially in 4WD Sport mode, emphasizing the M5’s sporty character. For purists, a 2WD mode can be selected, sending power exclusively to the rear wheels with DSC disabled, offering a raw and unfiltered driving experience. This advanced iteration of M xDrive, along with the electronically controlled Active M Differential at the rear axle, is finely tuned to complement the M HYBRID drive system’s performance characteristics.

Advanced Chassis Technology: Precision Handling and Agility of the BMW M5 2024

The chassis of the new BMW M5 is engineered for exceptional dynamics, featuring a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle with bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics.
