Often, the most resonant definition of automotive luxury circles back to comfort, as exemplified by the iconic Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Hand-assembled in 1957, this Cadillac was a rolling showcase of every imaginable luxury feature of its era. From cruise control and an automatic headlight dimmer to power windows, a transistor radio, and air conditioning, the Eldorado Brougham boasted innovations that would soon become commonplace in vehicles across the spectrum. It wasn’t just a car; it was a statement of opulence and a harbinger of automotive advancements to come.
Luxury, in this context, becomes a snapshot of a specific moment in time. When evaluating the greatest luxury cars, we must consider how effectively each vehicle fulfilled its intended purpose within the landscape of its own era. Comparing a vintage masterpiece like the Duesenberg Model J to the forward-thinking Citroën DS or the meticulously engineered Lexus LS 400, and even to the electric marvel that is the Tesla Model S, presents a unique challenge. Yet, each of these automobiles rightfully earns its place among the pantheon of the most exceptional luxury cars ever created.

Our evaluation process considered several key criteria: innovation, sheer sumptuousness, and historical importance. A panel of nine automotive experts cast their votes, focusing exclusively on four-door models to maintain a consistent category and exclude grand tourers, convertibles, and other distinct automobile classes. We deliberately avoided rigid distinctions between premium, luxury, or ultra-luxury, embracing the idea that true luxury is subjective and immediately recognizable.
The extensive list initially encompassed 148 models spanning over a century of automotive history. Within this impressive selection, the top 50 received multiple votes, while only the top three achieved unanimous consensus. This rigorous process led to some notable omissions, including numerous Mercedes-Benz models, the original Lincoln Town Car, and the Humber Super Snipe. Interestingly, the debates surrounding luxury cars proved less contentious than those sparked by discussions of the greatest sports cars. Perhaps the most significant point of contention revolved around determining which Rolls-Royce model would ultimately claim the coveted number one position.
The pursuit of crafting the world’s finest luxury car has been a challenging and sometimes perilous endeavor for automakers, with more than a few succumbing to financial pressures in the attempt. Conversely, the automotive industry has also witnessed moments of remarkable growth and maturity, such as Toyota’s successful launch of Lexus and BMW’s introduction of the 7 Series. Luxury cars represent the pinnacle of an automaker’s capabilities, embodying aspirations and pushing boundaries.
