Interestingly, the vehicles that meet these criteria all come from a single manufacturer: Toyota.
While Subaru is renowned for its extensive lineup of AWD vehicles, only a select few models achieve a combined fuel economy of 30 mpg. Although Subaru is developing new hybrid models, they are not expected to be available for at least another year. Similarly, the Nissan Altima offers an AWD option for just under $30,000, but its fuel economy remains below the 30 mpg combined mark.

This year marks the second iteration of this analysis, and we’ve observed some shifts in the market. Notably, the Prius LE AWD, which previously met our budget criteria, now exceeds the $30,000 limit for 2024 by a small margin.
Alternatively, for those willing to forgo AWD, the 2024 Kia Niro hybrid presents an attractive option. Starting well under $30,000, it boasts an EPA combined fuel economy of 53 mpg, packaged in a crossover-style body. If slightly more ground clearance is desired, the Kia Sportage Hybrid in front-wheel-drive configuration also remains under $30,000 and achieves 40 mpg. However, opting for AWD in the Sportage Hybrid pushes the price above $30,000 and reduces fuel economy to 38 mpg.
The Ford Escape Hybrid and the Ford Maverick Hybrid pickup also come close to meeting our requirements. The Maverick Hybrid, particularly, stands out with a base price of $25,515 for the XL Hybrid trim and achieves 37 mpg combined, although AWD is not available with its hybrid powertrain.
Toyota does offer other AWD models that surpass 40 mpg combined, such as the Toyota Crown, but these options come at a higher price point, exceeding our $30,000 limit.
Nevertheless, for those prioritizing affordability, fuel efficiency, and AWD capability, two Toyota models stand out in 2024 as the best choices under $30,000. Let’s delve into the specifics:
