As a new owner of the 2024 Chevy Colorado Zr2, I wanted to share my initial experiences, specifically regarding the build quality. Prior to this ZR2, I’ve owned a variety of vehicles, with my last six truck purchases being a mix of Toyota and Nissan models. I’m not loyal to any particular brand, but I must admit, my experience with the new Colorado ZR2 has been quite different from my previous new truck purchases.
Within just six weeks of ownership, I’ve encountered a series of build quality issues that have left me questioning the factory’s attention to detail. Here’s a rundown of the problems I’ve experienced:
- Incorrectly Installed Coil Wire Plugs: This initial issue was significant enough to require a tow truck to bring the vehicle back to the dealership for repair.
- Paint Blemishes: The driver’s side door had noticeable paint imperfections, necessitating a re-spray to correct the issue.
- Misaligned Emblems: The emblems on the vehicle were not installed straight, indicating a lack of precision in assembly.
- Incomplete Door Trim Installation: Sections of the door trim were not properly secured, pointing to rushed or careless assembly.
- Uneven Door and Window Shaping: The front and rear doors near the windows exhibit different shapes, resulting in an air gap that produces a whistling noise at highway speeds.
- Loose Wheel Arches: Hardware was missing from the wheel arches, causing them to detach from the body of the truck.
- Sagging Headliner: The headliner is visibly sagging and can be seen from the exterior of the vehicle, a clear cosmetic defect.
- Visible Carpet Seams: The painted floor is exposed through the carpet seams throughout the interior, indicating poor carpet fitting.
- Roof Cave-In Issue: Perhaps the most concerning issue is that the roof of the truck caved in when using a standard car wash – the same car wash I’ve used for ten years without issue on other trucks. While the dealer has addressed most of the above issues, the roof problem remains unresolved. Despite providing the dealer with Bulletin No.: 23-NA-209 (updated March 2024), they claim to be unaware of the roof issue and have ceased communication regarding this specific problem.
Despite these build quality concerns, I must acknowledge the positive aspects of the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2. The truck’s driving performance is excellent, it has ample power for its size, and aesthetically, it’s a very attractive vehicle, especially from a distance. However, these issues raise questions about the overall manufacturing quality and attention to detail in the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2. Hopefully, Chevrolet will address these concerns in future production runs to ensure a higher standard of quality for this otherwise impressive truck.
