Unleashing Beastly Power from a 2001 Corvette Z06

The C5 generation Corvette Z06, particularly the 01 Corvette model, is celebrated among automotive enthusiasts for its impressive performance straight from the factory. However, for those seeking to push boundaries, the C5 Z06 platform offers incredible potential for power upgrades. David Franza’s meticulously modified 2001 Corvette Z06, recently showcased by Super Chevy, serves as a perfect example of just how far you can take this iconic American sports car.

A Personal Tribute in a High-Performance ’01 Corvette

More than just raw power, Franza’s ’01 Corvette Z06 carries a deeply personal meaning. The “528” subtly inscribed on the rear of the car isn’t just a random number; it represents May 28th, the day his mother passed away in 2016. This poignant detail transforms the car into a rolling memorial, a constant reminder of his loved one.

Driven by a lifelong aspiration to own a C5 Corvette, Franza began his search shortly after his mother’s passing. He sought solace and a project in this dream car. After an extensive search, a 2001 model surfaced in late 2016, a few hours away. Undaunted by a sudden snowstorm, Franza persevered, driving through treacherous conditions to bring his ’01 Corvette Z06 project car home.

Initially, Franza envisioned keeping his ’01 Corvette Z06 in its original condition. However, the allure of performance upgrades proved too strong to resist. An irresistible deal on performance parts ignited a modification spree. This initial package included performance-rebuilt cylinder heads, an aftermarket camshaft, a Vortech V2 supercharger for forced induction, and a Lingenfelter fuel system upgrade complete with enhanced injectors and fuel pump to support the added power.

This combination immediately demonstrated its potential on the dynamometer, unleashing an impressive 713 horsepower and 637 lb-ft of torque at 12.5 psi of boost. However, the stock clutch reached its limit before the full capabilities could be explored. A robust McLeod RXT clutch was promptly installed, paving the way for further enhancements to this potent ’01 Corvette.

The pursuit of performance is often a progressive journey. For Franza’s ’01 Corvette Z06, this meant upgrading the axles to handle the increased power. Visually and functionally enhancing the stance, he opted for 18-inch Rotiform KPS wheels. These were paired with 255/55R18 Achilles ATR Sport tires at the front and wider 335/30R18 Hoosier R7 tires at the rear, maximizing grip and traction for the upgraded horsepower.

To accommodate the significantly wider rear tires, Lewis Five Motorsports widebody fenders were installed, dramatically altering the car’s appearance. A carbon fiber hood was added, further reducing weight and adding a performance aesthetic. To complete the visual transformation, the ’01 Corvette Z06 was wrapped in a sleek gloss black, with custom graphics applied by A-Plus Auto Styling in Forest Hill, Maryland, giving it a truly sinister look.

The interior of this ’01 Corvette Z06 also received attention, reflecting its performance-oriented nature. Corbeau Evolution X seats, a Brey-Krause harness bar, RJS harnesses, and an OMP black suede steering wheel create a track-ready cockpit feel. RS series coilovers were installed to refine the suspension, ensuring handling matched the immense power.

After all the modifications, Franza’s sinister ’01 Corvette Z06 returned to the dyno for a final power check. This time, it registered nearly 800 horsepower at the wheels, a testament to the effectiveness of the build. This project emphatically demonstrates that the C5 Corvette, especially the Z06, remains a highly relevant and potent platform, even in the face of newer Corvette generations. The ’01 Corvette Z06 continues to be a favorite among enthusiasts seeking a blend of performance, style, and modification potential.
