Modify Your BAFX Products Bluetooth OBD2 Scan Tool for Switched Power

Are you looking to modify your Bafx Products Bluetooth Obd2 Scan Tool for more convenient and efficient use? Many users prefer their OBD2 adapters to only draw power when the vehicle is running, preventing potential battery drain. This guide will walk you through a simple modification to convert your BAFX Bluetooth OBD2 adapter to switched 12V power. This ensures the device only powers on when your car is on or in accessory mode. This modification is straightforward and can be completed in about 15 minutes.

Here’s how to modify your BAFX Products PIC18F2480 Bluetooth OBD2 adapter for switched power:

  1. Access the Internals: Begin by removing the blue label on your BAFX OBD2 adapter. Beneath the label, you will find four screws. Carefully unscrew and remove these to open the adapter casing.

  2. Disconnect the Connector: Once the screws are removed, gently separate the two halves of the unit. Inside, you’ll see a white connector attached to the PC board. Unplug this white connector to detach the OBDII connector from the internal electronics.

  3. Remove the OBDII Connector: With the white connector detached, you can now lift the OBDII connector assembly completely out of the adapter’s shell. This provides clear access to the pins we need to modify.

  4. Relocate the Power Wire: The key to this modification is moving the power source. Locate pin 16, which provides constant 12V power. Carefully move the wire from pin 16 to pin 8. Pin 8 is designated for switched ACC 12V power. On the connector, pin 16 is typically on the top left, and pin 8 is on the bottom left, making this a simple and direct wire relocation.

  5. Reassemble the Connector: After moving the wire, place the OBDII connector back into the shell of the BAFX Bluetooth OBD2 scan tool. Reconnect the white connector to the PC board, ensuring it is firmly seated.

  6. Close the Casing: Carefully reassemble the two halves of the adapter shell. Secure them back together using the four screws you removed earlier. Be mindful of the five LEDs inside the case during reassembly to avoid bending them.

  7. Apply or Discard Label: You can now choose to reapply the blue label or leave it off, depending on your preference. The modification is now complete.

Your BAFX Products Bluetooth OBD2 scan tool will now operate just as before, but it will only receive power when your vehicle is powered on or in accessory mode. This switched power configuration works seamlessly and is especially beneficial when using apps like Turbo3’s App, ensuring no unnecessary battery drain from your OBD2 adapter.
