Zurich ZR13 OBD2 Scanner Review: ABS/SRS & FixAssist Functionality Tested

When your vehicle throws a wrench in your plans, having the right diagnostic tools can be a game-changer. Recently, I found myself in a situation where my truck decided to dramatically lose power right in the middle of my neighbor’s driveway. Stuck and unable to even make it to the local auto parts store, I realized the urgent need for a reliable OBD2 scanner, especially one capable of tackling more than just basic engine codes. That’s when I opted for the Zurich ZR13 OBD2 Code Reader, primarily because it advertised ABS/SRS diagnostic capabilities along with the FixAssist feature, and was readily available.

Despite the check engine light remaining stubbornly off, connecting the ZR13 revealed a trove of stored codes. It pinpointed issues related to glow plug/controller failure and a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor problem. Clearing these codes temporarily revived the truck, allowing me to limp it back home before the issues resurfaced. What struck me was how quickly the problem escalated; the truck ran perfectly fine until it suddenly didn’t. Given the truck’s mileage nearing 130,000 miles, I decided to proactively replace all the glow plugs with an AC Delco set. I also planned to grab some MAF sensor cleaner to see if a simple cleaning could resolve that issue, or if a sensor replacement would be necessary. While researching the codes, I learned that glow plug controller failures aren’t typical at this mileage, so I decided to hold off on replacing that component for now.

Adding to the surprise, a new message popped up on the dashboard after reaching home: “exhaust filter needs cleaning.” Admittedly, I was unaware my truck even had an exhaust filter! Fortunately, the solution was straightforward – a 30-minute drive at speeds above 20 mph.

Looking beyond this immediate truck issue, I’m also keen to test the Zurich ZR13 on our 2012 Volvo XC60 and my granddaughter’s classic 1998 Beetle. The ability to diagnose ABS and SRS issues, along with the FixAssist feature, promises a more comprehensive understanding of vehicle health beyond just the engine. I’ll be sure to share my findings after putting the ZR13 through its paces on these different models. For now, the Zurich ZR13 has already proven its worth as a valuable tool in diagnosing and addressing vehicle problems, going beyond basic code reading to offer functionality that can be crucial for modern vehicle maintenance.
